Background of the Study
Traditional rulers in Ede South have historically served as custodians of cultural heritage, playing pivotal roles in the conservation of archaeological sites. Their involvement in safeguarding ancient relics and managing communal narratives underscores a unique intersection of governance, tradition, and heritage management (Adesola, 2023). Recent studies reveal that these leaders actively mediate between modern conservation practices and indigenous traditions, ensuring that archaeological sites are respected and preserved (Ajayi, 2024). Moreover, traditional authorities often serve as the first line of defense against encroaching urban development and cultural erosion. The integration of traditional knowledge with scientific conservation methods has fostered innovative community-based approaches that enhance site management and promote cultural continuity (Bello, 2025). This research examines how the role of traditional rulers extends beyond ceremonial duties to become instrumental in preserving historical legacies. By exploring their strategies, challenges, and contributions, the study aims to establish a framework for integrating traditional authority into formal conservation policies, thus ensuring the sustainable preservation of archaeological heritage.

Statement of the Problem
Despite their crucial role in heritage conservation, traditional rulers in Ede South face challenges in harmonizing indigenous practices with modern conservation standards. Conflicts over land use, inadequate resources, and the pressure of urbanization have compromised their capacity to protect archaeological sites effectively. Inconsistent collaboration between governmental agencies and traditional authorities further exacerbates these issues. This study seeks to identify these challenges and assess the impact of traditional leadership on archaeological conservation efforts, aiming to propose strategies that reinforce their pivotal role (Folarin, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the contribution of traditional rulers to archaeological conservation.

  2. To identify challenges in integrating traditional and modern conservation methods.

  3. To propose strategies that strengthen traditional leadership roles in heritage management.

Research Questions:

  1. How do traditional rulers influence archaeological conservation in Ede South?

  2. What challenges hinder effective conservation practices?

  3. What strategies can improve the integration of traditional and modern conservation methods?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Traditional rulers significantly contribute to the conservation of archaeological sites.

  2. Integration challenges exist between indigenous practices and modern methodologies.

  3. Enhanced collaboration improves conservation outcomes.

Significance of the Study
This study highlights the indispensable role of traditional rulers in safeguarding cultural heritage. The findings will inform policy development, promote effective conservation partnerships, and empower local leadership. The research offers a critical perspective that bridges traditional authority and modern conservation practices, benefiting heritage professionals and community stakeholders alike (Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to the role of traditional rulers in archaeological conservation in Ede South Local Government Area and does not address broader national or international contexts.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Traditional Rulers: Indigenous leaders with cultural and administrative authority.

  2. Archaeological Conservation: The preservation and protection of ancient sites.

  3. Heritage Management: Strategies and practices aimed at safeguarding cultural legacies.
